It only takes a few scenes for this fear to give way to surprise, relief and pleasure. Released online by Amazon Prime Video, it's an adaptation of a novel by Karen Cushman and aimed at teenage girls. And then the announcement of Catherine, Called Birdy, her second film of the year, aroused more anxiety than curiosity. Her second feature, Sharp Stick, presented this year at the Sundance Film Festival, sank without leaving a trace, other than a few unenthusiastic reviews.
